NEW EMERGENCY SERVICE FOR MIDDLESBROUGH

TADEA has launched a scheme to provide emergency services for vulnerable households in Middlesbrough.

The Billingham-based company is working with Middlesbrough Council to provide free central heating installations and repairs to help reduce cold-related illness and fuel poverty.

David Morgan, TADEA project manager, said: “The scheme is essentially for vulnerable people in urgent need of assistance who cannot wait for other programmes to respond. This includes the elderly, people with disabilities and families with young or disabled children.

“We will make a prompt decision as to whether an applicant qualifies and appoint a qualified and accredited heating engineer to undertake the work, including an initial survey. I urge anyone that has a problem with their central heating and thinks they could qualify for assistance to contact us immediately.”

Medical experts agree that exposure to the cold increases the number of winter deaths and readmissions to hospital, associated mainly with respiratory or cardio-vascular ailments.

Spending too long in the cold lowers your body temperature, which can often aggravate circulatory diseases. This can lead to strokes and heart attacks or respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis or pneumonia.

Older people with existing health problems are particularly at risk‚ so they need to take extra care when it is cold.

David Morgan added: “The people who qualify for this free scheme are those who are least able to help themselves.

“By installing more efficient heating systems and bringing existing systems up to modern standards, we can help them stay warm and improve their health.”
